How is this different from cloud-based converters like Cesium ion?
Rapid3D Converter runs entirely on your own machine or server. No model data is uploaded to any external service — there is no phone-home metering, no cloud dependency, and no network connection required during operation. This makes it suitable for infrastructure, government, and defense projects where data sovereignty is non-negotiable.
Why do I need export plugins for Revit, Bentley, etc.?
Professional CAD software (Revit, Bentley, Tekla, Navisworks, SolidWorks, Inventor) use proprietary file formats. Without using each vendor's official API, it is impossible to guarantee complete and lossless extraction of geometry, materials, hierarchy, and BIM attribute data. Our 6 dedicated export plugins use these official APIs to extract everything — no ODA-based lossy conversion. The plugins run inside the CAD software and export a .glzip file, which the Converter then processes into .opt + .db.
What is the difference between the free desktop app and the paid service?
The conversion engine is identical. The free desktop app has a single limitation: input model size ≤100 MB. It is permanent — no time limit, no conversion count limit. The paid license removes the size limit and adds the standalone conversion service — a self-hosted RESTful API with a management console, so your own programs can submit and track conversion jobs automatically (up to 20 concurrent API requests per licensed server). Most users start with the free desktop app to validate quality, then upgrade when they need to process production-scale models (0.5–5 GB) or automate batch workflows.
Can I try the full version before buying?
The free desktop app already gives you the full conversion pipeline — the only limit is input size (≤100 MB). For models under 100 MB, you can validate conversion quality, compression ratio, semantic retention, and loading performance completely for free. If you need to evaluate with a production-scale model (e.g., a 2 GB factory model), contact us for a 30–90 day enterprise evaluation license.
What output does the Converter produce?
Two files: .opt — optimized geometry file (Draco-compressed, LOD-structured, instanced) for high-performance web rendering. .db — SQLite database file containing component IDs, hierarchical structure, and all BIM attribute data. The .db schema is fully documented. Developers retrieve component IDs via the Loader's API and query corresponding attributes from the .db file.
Do I need to buy the Loader separately?
No. The Rapid3D Loader for Three.js npm package is free to download, use, and distribute — for educational, evaluation, and commercial projects. You only pay for the Converter license. The "reader" is free; the "writer" is paid.
What happens if a new CAD version is released?
We continuously maintain all 6 export plugins to support new CAD software versions. Plugin updates are included in your annual subscription at no additional cost. If a breaking API change occurs in a new CAD version, we prioritize adaptation based on customer demand — contact us if you need support for a specific version.
